Alternatives analysis used to arrive at polymer addition and gravity filtration process to support dewatering process

In an effort to prevent grease fats from entering the municipal waste stream, Pinellas County determined that a Fat/Oil/Grease (FOG) Receiving and Dewatering Facility would be an important addition to their integrated solid waste system. Like clogged human arteries, clogged sewer lines can have catastrophic consequences, causing sewer backups requiring cleanup and repair along with posing potential serious health threats.

HDR was selected by Pinellas County Utilities to plan, design and construct the FOG facility to receive dewatered grease trap waste. HDR designed the facility to accept approximately 30,000 gallons per day of fat/oil/grease received from grease haulers throughout Pinellas County. The liquid stream from the dewatering process is pumped to the county wastewater system. The dewatered grease is transported off-site to anaerobic digesters at the county's South Cross Bayou Wastewater Treatment Facility.

After evaluating alternatives, HDR and Pinellas County agreed upon  a polymer addition and gravity filtration process for the new facility that would be capable of expansion in 15,000-gallon per day modules.

After completion of the 60 percent design submittal, construction contracts were bid and awarded through a competitive bid process. HDR managed the construction and start-up phases. The facility has been online since spring of 2003.
