Working collaboratively with City staff, HDR prepared a preliminary engineering report for $6.2 million of improvements to the existing Main Lift Station at the Cedar Rapids Water Pollution Control Facility. The recommended improvements cost-effectively extend the useful life of the existing facility, increase pumping capacity, enable isolation of all critical components for future maintenance, and avoid bypassing influent wastewater and plant recycle flows during construction or subsequent maintenance activities.
It was determined that continued use of existing pumps and motors was cost-effective with motor refurbishment, and that variable speed pump drives were not required given the significant storage provided in the wet well and upstream collection system. With the addition of the second force main, pumping capacity was increased from 84,000- to 92,000-gallons per minute (121.0- to 132.5-million gallons per day).
