Fundamentals

What is sustainability?

Sustainability is often defined as meeting present needs without compromising the capability of future generations to meet their needs economically, socially, or environmentally. Sustainability requires embracing the triple bottom line of decisions - balancing economics, social equality, and the environment.

Why is sustainability important?

Human activity impacts the environment in many different ways. Issues such as air quality, resource availability, water quality, species and habitat destruction, and erosion can be at least partially, and often significantly, attributed to human activity. Decisions made today have the potential to impact people and the environment for generations to come. By addressing sustainability in decision making, there is an opportunity to find solutions that benefit the environment and people, while still being financially sound.

HDR's approach features three key elements:

  • Goal Setting
Every project presents an opportunity to incorporate some level of sustainability. While there are some sustainable design solutions that are appropriate for all projects, most are project-specific. HDR is well versed in the process of integrating project-specific solutions that are based on the goals of our clients, make sense in the context of the project, and contribute positively to the triple bottom line.
  • Integration
Sustainable strategies require an integrated approach that involves all stakeholders and carefully considers all project impacts.
  • Resources
HDR has created numerous tools and resources to facilitate the integration of sustainability into every project. Our clients benefit from our investment in integrating sustainability into our overall project planning and delivery culture.

What are the benefits of sustainable strategies and solutions?

There are a multitude of benefits related to addressing sustainable principles.
