The Obama Administration's sustainability mandates and initiatives are driving federal agencies to develop greenhouse gas emission baselines and reduction measures and begin thinking more about climate adaptation strategies. With the most aggressive GHG emission reduction of any federal agency, the Department of Defense is playing a key role. Perhaps more importantly, for the first time, DOD has included climate change in its Quadrennial Defense Review and stated that "climate change will play a significant role in shaping the future security environment."

DOD is helping to establish a framework for the U.S. government to define and implement the climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies described in this article.
