HDR's Solar Power Project at Alcatraz Island Featured in Preservation Magazine

(August 13, 2013) - Preservation, the magazine of the national Trust for Historic Preservation, published an article titled "Correctional Innovation" in its Summer 2013 issue. In it, they outlined the unique challenges of meeting Alcatraz island's energy needs without negatively impacting its historic and iconic qualities.

Together with the National Park Service, HDR prepared the schematic design and design-build request for proposal documentation to mount solar panels on two historic buildings on the island. HDR also provided construction management services for the project.

The Alcatraz solar power system is designed to be one of the largest off-grid solar systems in the United States and will dramatically reduce the island's dependence on diesel generators.
