Rosca Honored as 2013 ACEC Young Professional of the Year
(Jan. 30, 2013) - Gheorghe Rosca, Jr., rail section manager and associate in HDR's Riverside, Calif., office, has been named a 2013 American Council of Engineering Companies Young Professional of the Year. The award recognizes the accomplishments of young engineers by highlighting their interesting and unique work, and the resulting impact on society. The 2013 Young Professional Award winners will be recognized at the ACEC Fall Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Within four years of graduating with his bachelor's degree, Rosca was named rail section manager, with six employees reporting to him. He has managed projects with $30 million to $100 million in construction value, working on over 10 bridge replacements and four double-tracking projects. He is currently client manager for the North County Transit District, managing a $12 million on-call contract.
Through the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association's Committee 17, Rosca works with railway professionals to develop design criteria for high-speed rail infrastructure in the United States, and is president of the Railway Association of Southern California in 2013. Rosca also convinced his alma mater, Cal Poly Pomona, to start a railway engineering program. He will teach the first Railway Engineering course later this year, through which he will pass on critical knowledge his mentors instilled in him.
Rosca credits his parents with his passion for education and hard work. The Rosca family moved to the United States from Romania when he was a young child. With their parents' encouragement, he and his 11 siblings studied hard and all received scholarships to attend college.
