HDR Team is Awarded Construction Oversight Assistance Services for Ohio River Bridges Project

(May 9, 2013) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has selected an HDR-led team as the oversight assistance consultant for the Downtown Louisville Crossing and Section 4A of the East End Crossing of the Louisville-Southern-Indiana Ohio River Bridges project. The project was named among the Top 10 projects in the CE News 2013 Transportation Projects Roadmap based on project value.

The $1.3 billion project will play a critical role for the city of Louisville by improving cross-river mobility and safety in one of the nation's most congested and important highway corridors. It includes a new cable-stay bridge across the Ohio River at I-65; rehabilitation of the existing I-65 Kennedy Bridge; rehabilitation and reconfiguration of the existing I-64, I-65 and I-71 downtown interchange; and reconstruction and operational improvements to the downtown interchange and southern Indiana approaches. The project includes more than 60 permanent and temporary bridge structures.

Construction is expected to begin in July 2013 and be substantially completed in December 2016. The HDR team is providing oversight and inspection, material sampling and testing, quality assurance support and a number of other services. Team members include FIGG Bridge Inspection, Inc., Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., S&ME Inc., and other local and specialized firms.

"This project is not only about building a bridge, but about building it right the first time, so the Louisville and southern Indiana communities benefit for a long time," said Ben Edelen, HDR's Kentucky department manager and principal-in-charge on the project.
