Tucson Sun Link Streetcar Celebrates Grand Opening
(July 25, 2014) - After eight years of conceptualizing, planning and implementing, the Tucson Modern Streetcar is officially open. HDR's role in the project has grown from early conceptual planning to program manager through construction and revenue service.
The streetcar, known as Sun Link, was part of a $2.1 billion, 20-year Regional Transportation Authority plan. Sun Link will improve connectivity between the University of Arizona and downtown with its 3.9-mile alignment, 17 stops and a planned frequency of operation of 10 minutes during the day and 20 minutes during the evening. The $196 million project is the single largest construction project the city of Tucson has undertaken.
The streetcar opens to the public today with a ribbon cutting and free rides. HDR is a co-presenting sponsor of the Sun Link Streetcar 2014 Grand Opening Weekend. "The entire process, from early planning through construction, has been a team effort and the grand opening is the light at the end of the tunnel," said Dave Vozzolo, project advisor and streetcar practice director.
