Wollongong Central Wins Four NSW Architecture Awards

(July 10, 2015) - We are thrilled to announce that The GPT Group's Wollongong Central Development has won four awards at the 2015 Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Awards for the New South Wales chapter, as announced July 2 at the Sydney Town Hall.

Designed by HDR | Rice Daubney, HDR's Sydney architectural design studio, Wollongong Central is located just over 50 miles (approximately 80 kilometers) south of Sydney. Its design proudly reflects the natural beauty and rich culture of the region, creating a renewed social heart and retail destination for Wollongong that fuses architecture, art and culture. Most importantly, the project authentically reflects the city. "It is not a building the city deserved, but rather a building deserving of the city," notes Susanne Pini, director of retail + mixed use at HDR | Rice Daubney. Pini grew up in Wollongong and describes the city as exquisitely beautiful and brutal, raw and primal.

Wollongong Central adds these four awards to it's growing accolades; the project won two prestigious Architizer A+ awards earlier this year.

The AIA New South Wales awards won by Wollongong Central include the following:

Commercial Architecture – Architecture Award

"Wollongong Central is a testament to the value of long term vision and a willingness to challenge the status quo. It turns the traditional shopping centre inside out to actively engage with the community, setting up a framework for the future development of a dense urban community, which includes residents, students, retailers, office workers and visitors."

Urban Design – Architecture Award

"This is an exemplary project representing the new role of shopping centres as active players in the life of the city. Not segregated and contained, they face outwards and connect the streets and squares of the city. Wollongong Central presents a richly layered sequence of planning, commercial and formal decisions combined with clarity to enhance civic life now and into the future."

Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture – Commendation

"Constructed in the home of Australian steel, it might seem an obvious choice of material for the GPT Group's Wollongong Central, but the pressure to get it right is perhaps greater than if constructed elsewhere."

International Association of Lighting Design (IALD) Award

"Deviating from prescribed solutions, the lighting strategy displays a detailed coordination between light and architecture, and both natural and artificial lighting is used to enhance the building's complex materiality and structure." This award was bestowed to HDR | Rice Daubney and our partners at Electrolight.
