HDR Receives WasteCap Nebraska’s Sustainable Business of the Year Award
(October 8, 2015) - HDR has received a Sustainable Business of the Year award from WasteCap Nebraska, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste in Nebraska.
The Sustainable Business of the Year Award is presented to a Nebraska business or organization with an active Green Team that incorporates holistic, sustainable business practices. HDR has approximately 60 Green Teams throughout the company, including one at its Omaha headquarters.
HDR is being recognized for its leadership in a variety of areas, implemented by the Omaha Green Team and Omaha campus facilities director, said Kim Sosalla-Bahr, Sustainable Design project manager. Innovations by the Omaha facilities director, Ron Lund, include reducing energy consumption by updating chiller controls to operate one chiller instead of two to cool both Indian Hills buildings on mild weather days. HDR's Omaha office utilizes natural light, occupancy sensors and LED lighting fixtures. Facilities staff replaced 4,500 fluorescent light bulbs with lower wattage bulbs with the same output. Energy efficient appliances, equipment and vending machines are used throughout the facility.
Efforts by the Omaha Green Team included reducing greenhouse gas emissions by implementing composting efforts in the Omaha office, which have reduced trash dumpsters from two to one and increased composting amounts from an average of 375 lbs. per week to an average of 450 lbs. currently per week, Sosalla-Bahr said.
In conjunction with receiving the award, WasteCap Nebraska produced a video about HDR's sustainability program and its Omaha Green Team. In addition to interviews with Sosalla-Bahr and Lund, the video also features an interview with Michaella Wittmann, HDR's director of Sustainability.
