Wollongong Central Development Receives National Award from Australian Institute of Architecture

(November 25, 2015) - At a ceremony held in Brisbane this month, The GPT Group's Wollongong Central Development was awarded the National Award for Architecture in the Commercial category by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA). The National Award for Architecture is the highest honor bestowed by the AIA, the preeminent organization for the architectural profession in Australia.

The GPT Group's Wollongong Central Development, designed by HDR | Rice Daubney, is located just over 50 miles (approximately 80 kilometers) south of Sydney. Its design proudly reflects the natural beauty and rich culture of the region, creating a renewed social heart and retail destination for Wollongong that fuses architecture, art and culture.

AIA's jury lauded the project, stating, "The GPT Group's Wollongong Central redefines the role of a shopping center as an important city node and as having a responsibility beyond its property boundaries. It makes a significant contribution to revitalizing the City of Wollongong on multiple levels."

"The jury was particularly impressed by the architects' passion for making a difference, by the developer's foresight in seeing value in design excellence, and by the strong relationship that was developed with the City of Wollongong. This project is a showcase of how vision is developed, realized and achieved through collaboration and shared aspirations."

The win extends Wollongong Central's already impressive series of award wins, including two wins from the 2015 Architizer A+ Awards, a highly competitive global awards program, and four awards from the AIA New South Wales chapter.
