Civic

Our nation's civic system has a long and dignified history. Today, that system is facing increasing demands from the communities they serve. Civic facilities, many of them built more than a half-century ago, are in need of additional space, updated services and advanced technology.

HDR has designed court and detention facilities for federal, state, county and municipal government clients since the mid-1950s. With more than 100 professionals nationwide devoted to the design of court and detention facilities, HDR is recognized for innovation, technical competency and exceptional client service, and has become a leading civic design firm.

Recognizing the need for specialized services, HDR formed the Civic Design Group in 1975. This multi-disciplinary team of architects, engineers, interior designers, planners, security and technology specialists, and associated professionals is devoted to civic planning, design and construction. HDR's Civic Design Group has provided services for a variety of criminal civic facilities, including adult and juvenile correctional facilities; regional and county adult and juvenile detention centers; federal, state, county and city court facilities; women's correctional facilities; city halls; and correctional medical, psychiatric and mental health facilities.

Over the years, HDR has completed more than 250 civic projects in 40 states. These include more than 150 state and county detention and correctional facilities, representing more than 110,000 beds. HDR has also been associated with the planning, design or evaluation of 50 court projects, representing more than 11 million square feet of court and court-related spaces.
