Water Engineering Design
Client-focused engineering design teams are the backbone of our water practice and are experienced in all aspects of water conveyance, distribution, storage and treatment projects. Supporting our project design teams are six Architecture, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Centers that specialize in water and wastewater facilities. These Centers can execute multiple projects concurrently and improve overall efficiency, resulting in a quality project at lower costs.
Innovation is built into the design process and supported by our commitment to discover and apply advanced technologies and system improvements that are cost-effective, practical solutions. Experts in treatment process design work directly with design teams to determine the optimum process viability while constructibility experts determine "real world" construction cost ramifications. Together, an optimized solution is devised.
We invest in numerous tools and systems to improve the delivery of our engineering design services. Building Information Modeling (BIM), or intelligent 3-D design, is a newer tool that fosters collaboration for stakeholders during the design process – including the project owner, facility operators, civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical designers, as well as contractors. Our experience has proven that BIM can improve project design, expedite production, save money during construction, and improve long-term facility operation.
Value engineering and quality management are at the core of our design services. Our Concept & Criteria Review process and Engineering Best Practices programs are an advantage when designing high-performance facilities. Our clients benefit from the knowledge of our most experienced and talented water professionals and lifelong cost savings during the design, construction and operation of their facilities.
Sustainable design, as well as the evaluation of sustainable operations of new or upgraded infrastructure, is not something new to us. Sustainability and environmental stewardship is ingrained in every HDR technical group and service we offer. A considerable number of building standards have been developed, materials identified and "green" design solutions implemented to help reduce energy usage, carbon footprints, and GHG emissions in water and wastewater systems while providing additional environmental and community benefits.
