BNSF Kansas City Intermodal Facility

BNSF Railway's Argentine Intermodal Facility is a critical link along its Southern Transcon corridor, providing international and domestic lift capacity for 285,000 units annually. HDR developed concepts, performed environmental permitting and completed final engineering design at a site initially slated to replace Argentine, which, due to increasing demand for intermodal transportation, has exceeded its physical capacity.
The final site selected, the Kansas City Intermodal Facility (KCIMF), will improve access to cost-effective, low-emission intermodal service between the central Midwest, ports and other major markets using BNSF's transcontinental and I-35 trade corridors. For KCIMF, we conducted a traffic study, completed a concept design study and developed a request for proposals for solicitation of developers. We were later awarded final engineering design, permitting and environmental analysis. We also assisted in development of a design-build package for facilities, as well as a grant application for Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) funds.
The 492-acre, $200 million facility will handle 1 million containers annually. It will feature advanced technologies, including wide-span electric cranes, automated gate systems, rail car repair crane and a virtual weigh station.
