Central Transfer Station Design
- Related Projects: Resource Management, Waste Management
This HDR-designed project has helped metropolitan Atlanta transform an aging and outdated solid waste facility into a LEED-certified, award-winning facility. The old DeKalb County Central Transfer Station located just off the Atlanta beltline had been converted from an abandoned waste incinerator and retrofitted with a compactor suspended over the waste pit. The system was cumbersome with a severely limited throughput of about 100 tons per day. In developing a new facility, DeKalb County hired HDR to design a transfer station that would set a new standard for solid waste facilities with a focus on the environment, customer service, employee satisfaction and public outreach and education.
The new Central Transfer Station built on the site of old facility can process up to 2,500 tons per day of municipal solid waste and 750 tons of yard waste, kept separate at all times. HDR designed the Administration Building with sustainability in mind. This 22,000-square-foot facility is an engineered metal building structure with exterior finishes that feature a combination of concrete, metal and glass to maximize energy efficiency and architectural aesthetics. The building features a high efficiency HVAC system, extensive day-lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures and recycled materials.
