Child Development Center
Support for our largest and smallest customers
Holloman Air Force Base is home to more than 17,000 military and civilian personnel. Now, hundreds of its smallest residents have a new place to learn and play. We provided AE design and construction phase services for this 30,000 SF, $9.8M Child Development Center (CDC) to replace their existing facility on a 6-acre greenfield site.
The facility includes educational and entertaining spaces for babies, toddlers, and growing children, as well as administrative offices, mechanical/electrical equipment rooms, kitchen, and storage. A wet pipe sprinkler system, intrusion detection system, CCTV system, evacuation pads, and force protection elements to meet applicable AT/FP criteria were added to meet child and life safety requirements for building occupants. A solar hot water system was added to support the domestic water system. Additional site features included support staff parking, parent drop/off parking, service drives, an emergency vehicle road, evacuation pads, landscaping, access control and site lighting.
To meet the goals of the end users, and due to the specialized requirements related to CDC design, we also provided the design of the outdoor play environments and provided an Early Childhood Specialist to coordinate with base CDC staff and outdoor play equipment providers to ensure the design specified a nature based play environment. This includes hard and softscapes, landscaping, shade study, and loose play equipment.
The project received LEED Silver Certification, registered with the USGBC, in the summer of 2015.
