City of San Antonio Traffic Signal Modernization
We are working with the City of San Antonio to develop optimized signal timing and phasing plans for the initial deployment of model 2070 advanced traffic controllers. The project involves 13 corridors, with each corridor comprising between four and 18 intersections. In total, 151 intersections will be affected, including many freeway interchanges. The corridors represent a range of traffic patterns, including the high-volume and congested Medical Center Area, heavy retail districts and residential neighborhoods.
Our traffic specialists conducted a field inventory of all existing geometry and traffic control devices along the corridors to gauge current conditions. We discussed the new signal hardware and software capabilities with the city, and identified short- and long-term intersection improvement opportunities. Intersection analyses led to the development of improved coordinated arterial system timing plans. Our team worked with the city to determine field implementation of the timing plans.
To date, we have completed field implementation and fine tuning for approximately 127 intersections. We have also conducted before-and-after travel time comparisons using GPS units and prepared video recordings of travel time runs. The comparisons showed significant travel time improvements.
