Civilian Personnel Office
To support consolidation of military and civilian personnel operations at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas, we served as the design consultant on a design-build project for a new 35,000 square foot civilian personnel office. With a goal of obtaining LEED Silver status, the new facility design maximized the use of recycled materials in manufactured products, including drywall, ceiling tiles and carpets. Large low-E windows maximize daylighting while the facility meets required anti-terrorism/force protection (AT/FP) design requirements. Working with Weston Solutions as the construction partner, this design-build project moved forward on schedule for ribbon-cutting in August 2010. The work included demolition of an existing building, site work, utilities, new parking lots, area lighting and entry and exit roadways.
A key challenge was to design a new and sustainable facility that would blend in with the unique historic Spanish colonial revival style architecture that characterizes structures on Randolph AFB. The new building design features architectural elements that allow it to blend seamlessly into the base character, while meeting LEED standards. HDR designed and specified windows, window framing and structural wall framing supports to comply with AT/FP window blast criteria and exterior features to meet required minimum clearances.
