Installed in 1882, Colton Crossing was known as the oldest bottleneck in U.S. history. Today, foreign and domestic commerce have increased and made it one of the busiest at-grade rail crossings in the United States, serving an average of 125 trains daily.

To help alleviate significant delays, congestion and freight stoppage, a public-private partnership collaborated to design a flyover structure to lift Union Pacific Railroad's east/west tracks 35 feet above BNSF Railway's north/south tracks.

Navigating a web of project complexities, the team addressed the concerns of more than 20 project stakeholder groups. Primary design challenges included keeping mainlines open during construction and overcoming tight site constraints with poor soil conditions and seismic considerations.

Delivered under budget and ahead of schedule, the Colton Crossing Flyover has improved efficiency for the two largest U.S. freight railroads, with additional benefits of enhanced air quality and reduced noise for the local community.
