Do Space

Omaha, Nebraska, USA

Do Space rethinks the evolution of the modern library. This "community technology library" creates digitally driven educational opportunities for people of all walks of life, empowering the local community with tools, guidance, and access to technology. The facility provides many spaces for the community to explore digital technology, including a collaborative computer lab, dedicated children's rooms, a "Makerspace," and an eBook checkout system with a digital book archive.

An incubator for technology, the space is designed flexibly to change and adapt as requirements from the community shift. The design concept is inspired by modern technology: similar to a computer, the facility serves as a "shell" for educational "programs" that can be modified as technology evolves. Renovation of the facility, formerly an out-of-business big box bookstore, includes all new interiors, upgrades to all building systems, a dedicated data center, and exterior modifications.

The first floor of the facility is open to the public, providing access to technology and software that is often too expensive for individual families to own. People of all levels of experience are invited to come and learn in a public environment. A coffee shop adjacent to the open collaboration area serves as an informal touchdown zone for patrons of the library. The Makerspace connects theoretical learning to product development. Housing tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines along with the computer software and hardware to operate the tools, the Makerspace allows ideas to be taken from conception to completion—bridging "what if" and "what will be."

The second floor offers specialized programs that advance concepts presented on the first level. Here, the Metropolitian Community College will be leading innovative educational programs and classes. Do Space has partnered with the Omaha Public Library to make a number of digital resources and databases available, as well as a collection of STEM ebooks available for checkout, expanding members' educational opportunities.
