Saving energy is both good for the environment and good for saving budget dollars. To help the Army National Guard optimize energy use in 44 buildings at two locations on the island of Guam, we used the Facility Energy Decision System (FEDS) to perform a comprehensive site energy audit. We identified the most promising retrofit opportunities to support energy conservation and to help meet renewable energy goals. FEDS provides a comprehensive approach to fuel-neutral, technology-independent, integrated energy resource planning and acquisition.

The work began with a preliminary site energy audit that included in-depth interviews, review of operating data and a walk-through to help identify opportunities to incorporate renewable energy technologies. This was followed with a FEDS model that incorporated floor areas, occupancy schedules, lighting, heating/cooling and domestic hot water technologies, utility rates and other fuel pricing. The final Energy Audit Report identified the most promising retrofit technologies and provided estimates of capital investment requirements and potential energy and cost savings based on federal life-cycle cost economics.
