Gulf Marine Fabricators' Ingleside Yard Graving Dock
Gulf Marine Fabricators (GMF) was awarded a contract for the fabrication of a Minimum Deepwater Operating Concept (MinDOC) hull for ATP Oil & Gas. GMF needed a way to fabricate it on a land-based site and then transport it to a water-based floating location. A graving dock was determined to be the best option. We completed conceptual and final design of Gulf Marine Fabricators Ingleside Yard Graving Dock, prepared an Opinion of Probable Construction Cost (OPCC), and also provided construction administration services.
Project challenges included designing a structure large enough to accommodate the fabrication of the MinDOC, constructing the graving dock at a difficult site and working within a compressed project schedule. Working with GMF, we were able to initiate dock construction while finishing design to keep the project running smoothly.
The unique structure includes atypical walls designed and constructed with steel sheet piles anchored with a series of high-strength, post-tensioned anchor rods. It also has a removable south wall instead of movable gates, which provided a cost-effective solution to a significant design challenge. In addition, we designed the graving dock's concrete floor with consideration for future use and adaptability. GMF can now use the dock to fabricate future large structures and has an economical way of moving those structures once complete.
