Markus Meister Laboratory
Driven by a desire to recruit the best talent from top institutions, CalTech customized several laboratories in the Beckman Behavioral Biology Building for targeted research. This high-tech renovation provides custom research space for Professor Markus Meister, whose focus is understanding circuits of nerve cells in the brain.
Since the primary experiments, neural recordings, are performed in darkrooms, the remainder of the facility needs to be vibrant and energizing, a place that stimulates curiosity and discovery, to counteract the effects of time spent working in the dark. The wet lab block is expressed as a large floating source of light, clad with color-changed translucent blacklit Varia Ecoresin panels. This design feature defines the central core of the lab and provides the Meister lab with a unique identity. To meet the mission of creating an outstanding interdisciplinary atmosphere for research and education, HDR revitalized the old dark spaces into an open vibrant collaborative environment.
