Completion of the Pinal West substation helps to meet service area load growth and reliability. The HDR power delivery team worked to complete detailed and electrical design, as well as wiring of the joint 500/345/69 kV substation.

The substation consists of three separately fenced yards. The ultimate 500 kV switchyard contains five bays in a breaker-and-a-half configuration. The ultimate 345 kV yard contains two 500/345 kV transformers and three bays in a breaker-and-a-half configuration, and the ultimate 69 kV yard contains two 500/69 kV transformers and up to four 69 kV lines.

The initial design of the 345 kV yard included site preparation, control building, one 500/345 kV transformer, breakers and disconnect switches. It also required buswork to terminate two 345 kV lines and one 500/345 kV transformer in a ring-bus configuration.
