HDR and Gerald Martin Construction are providing construction management services for Spaceport America, located 45 miles north of Las Cruces, N.M. Spaceport America is the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport, overseen by the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA). The project is a combined effort of the State of New Mexico and Virgin Galactic (VG). VG, the world's first commercial "spaceline" company, will own and operate its privately-built spaceships for sub-orbital space flights.
The project includes an airfield, internal roadways, a water supply and distribution system, an aircraft rescue and fire fighting station, a fuel storage facility, and a 110,000-aquare-foot combined terminal and hangar facility designed by URS Corporation and Foster + Partners.
The spaceport is an iconic project that has already received worldwide recognition. Designed to accommodate both vertical-launch and horizontal-launch aircraft and space vehicles, it will serve as the base for pre-flight and post-flight activities, and will be known as the birthplace of commercial space flight.
The Spaceport has been registered for LEED Gold certification and has a construction cost of approximately $200 million. Construction on the Spaceport began in June 2009 and is expected to be complete in 2012.
