St. Paul Children's Hospital
This expansion of St. Paul Children's Hospital located on the edge of downtown St. Paul acts as a new gateway to the hospital complex and establishes a new architectural language to inform future campus projects.
Located on a tight, urban site, with surrounding poured-in-place concrete buildings, the design is carefully inserted into the hospital with a series of thoughtful "interventions" composing the new tower. The same poured-in-place concrete construction maintains structural integrity, but it is clad with a new exterior material palette. Representative of stacking of simple children's blocks, the massing is informal and playful. Various sized "blocks" are wrapped in anodized aluminum and zinc metal panels, sandstone colored brick, and curtain wall glazing. The red metal panels and sandstone-colored brick tie the design to the existing mostly brick campus through color, but offer a fresh, clean, "high-tech" material more in keeping with a modern healthcare facility. Gray zinc panels clad and distinguish the curved façades of the bed tower, while the red metal wraps around a glazed façade, framing a picture of the caring and healing activities that take place inside, thus demystifying the hospital experience. A roof garden provides a place of respite for children and their families, while also serving to minimize the building's heat gain.
The 2,017-square-foot entry building addition, completed in 2015, captures the imagination with sculptural ribbons that pull you in, abundant light shining through the two-story atrium and bright-colored branding stars that define the vibrant space. Every line was methodically positioned to aid in wayfinding, and it reinforces the Children's brand, making the space feel whimsical and child-like.
