University Klinikum of Schleswig-Holstein Modernization
The University Klinikum of Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) is one of the largest academic medical centers in Europe and the only comprehensive care hospital in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost of the 16 federal states of Germany. In late 2014, the BAM/VAMED consortium, which includes HDR | TMK (our German architecture company), JSWD Architekten, Sander Hofrichter Architekten and TSJ Architekten, was awarded the modernization project for the UKSH Kiel and Lübeck campuses. The project, which follows a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) delivery model, is valued at approximately US $1.9 billion (€1.7 billion), making it the largest PPP project to ever be undertaken in Germany.
Altogether, the project involves approximately 2.7 million SF (255,300 m²) of extensive new construction, renovation of existing health and research buildings, and preservation of historic buildings. It also includes the creation of new main entrances for each campus. BAM is providing construction services, VAMED will operate and maintain the healthcare facilities until 2044, and the four architecture firms are splitting the design work—Sander Hofrichter Architekten and TSJ Architekten are working on the Lübeck campus and HDR | TMK and JSWD Architekten are working on the Kiel campus.
The architectural design unifies both campuses and becomes the new corporate architecture for the UKSH brand. Buildings are structured horizontally to integrate with—rather than loom over—the landscape. The base of all the buildings are clad in brick, blending with the surrounding development and paying tribute to the traditional architectural style found in Northern Germany. Atop the brick base are building masses that stay true to German modernism—cubic white forms with green accents. New campus atriums welcome natural light, featuring glass walls and expansive skylights; white perforated paneling and large environmental graphics of the UKSH logo create a cohesive design language.
The project is expected to reach completion in 2021.
