With St. Petersburg, Clearwater and several barrier island communities within its boundaries, Pinellas County is the most densely populated county in Florida with a permanent population of nearly 1 million. A robust tourist industry helps support 35,000 local businesses. As the main north-south roadway through Pinellas County, U.S. 19 has caused concern for residents and business owners alike with endless congestion and safety issues.

A comprehensive public involvement campaign combined with an innovative engineering solution transformed the 1.7-mile stretch of U.S. 19 between 49th Street and 126th Avenue into a modern, safe passageway. Extreme right-of-way limitations led to a solution to cantilever the mainline outside lanes of grade-separated intersections over the left turn lanes of the frontage road below. Clear signage guides drivers to local businesses along the elevated section of roadway, helping to sustain the vital commerce along this corridor.

The upgraded roadway opened in January 2010 on time and within budget, providing a safe and fast transportation backbone to serve those who live, work and play in Pinellas County.
