Western Regional Conveyance Tunnel/Collection System
To effectively manage wet weather flows while complying with a consent decree and addressing SSO and CSO concerns in its Western Regional System, Sanitation District No. 1 of Northern Kentucky selected HDR to manage a team of six consultants to update and implement its Regional Facilities Plan, its largest capital improvement project to date.
A pivotal part of the program involved replacing a proposed 60 MGD pump station with a seven-mile-long gravity flow controlled conveyance tunnel. The upper 6.2 miles of the Western Regional Conveyance Tunnel (12-foot bore rock tunnel) will function as a gravity flow conveyance sewer. It will also provide up to 14 MG of storage volume to help SD1 manage its wet weather flows and to meet its consent decree.
Under HDR's program management, tunnel construction is six months ahead of schedule and $20 million under budget. The tunnel is scheduled to go into operation in late 2012.
