Larry Hartman Covers Health Standards for Corrections

Justice architect Larry Hartman recently co-authored an article for the December 2016 American Institute of Architects’ Academy of Architecture for Justice Journal. Larry described existing correctional standards and the importance of developing comprehensive design standards and guidelines for healthcare in correctional facilities.

Drawing parallels between standards in the community and the types and levels of care needed in both new and renovated jails and prisons, Larry shows how it would improve care to apply a number of these design guidelines to address the full spectrum of inmates’ needs—from behavioral health up through hospice care.

This article begins with a discussion of existing standards for correctional health care facilities, including strengths, weakness, and their applicability to modern correctional environments. Following this discussion is a description of an initiative by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC) and the authors toward the development of correctional health care facility design guidelines that will be made available to architects and planners.
