HDR: Moving Past the Big White Medical Box

An article titled "HDR: Moving past the big white medical box" has been published in The Fifth Estate and discusses the importance of designing community-driven, restorative spaces that address the social determinants of healthcare in Australian cities and regions. In the article, HDR Director of Health Bruce Crook discuss the shift from ‘health care’ to ‘health, wellbeing + preventative care’ and the movement towards value-based, population health models. 

Bruce also shares his perspectives on the transformation of hospitals from conventionally monolithic closed systems to places and precincts where walls are broken down, connections to transport, public space and Country is prioritised, and community converges. He uses the Victoria Community Hospitals Program as an example of integrating human-centred design outcomes with technological innovations to deliver smart healthcare infrastructure with community at its heart.
