Materials Sciences and Engineering Building Wins International Architecture Award
HDR, in association with Grimshaw Architects, recently won an International Architecture Award for its Materials Sciences and Engineering Building at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
Jointly organised by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the annually-held International Architecture Awards recognise cutting-edge architectural design worldwide and promotes it to a global audience.
The University of New South Wales is regarded as one of Australia’s leading research and teaching institutions. The School of Materials Science and Engineering leads innovative research that ranges from materials production to the design, development, processing and recycling of materials for use in aerospace, transportation, electronics, energy conversion and biomedical systems.
The Materials Science and Engineering Building celebrates ‘science on display’ with its abundance of research and collaboration spaces. A number of the laboratory spaces making up the core of the facility are transparent so that the work of the scientists within is visible to the public. Multiplex successfully delivered the construction of the 23,500m2 facility.
The University of New South Wales Materials Science and Engineering Building’s accolades from 2016 include the Australian Institute of Architects’ Award for New South Wales and National Commendation for Educational Architecture.
Held in Dallas, Texas, this year’s International Architecture Awards jury saw a distinguished group of architects select the winning submissions from a shortlist of over 300 projects. On 8 September 2017, The Chicago Athenaeum, together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, will officially present this year’s winners with their Awards and launch an exhibition of the awarded projects at its annual symposium held in Athens, Greece.
