Cedars-Sinai Biomanufacturing Center Recognized by Lab of the Year and Fast Company
Innovation in both science and design has earned the Cedars-Sinai Biomanufacturing Center, designed by HDR, honours in two highly recognised design programs: Special Recognition in the Lab of the Year program and Honorable Mention in both “Spaces and Places” and “Real Estate” categories in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design program.
The Cedars-Sinai Biomanufacturing Center integrates stem cell research, development and manufacturing in a single facility and within walking distance of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Campus. Located in the iconic Pacific Design Center, it gives new meaning to “high design.” The design reflects the cutting-edge research the space supports while complementing the pedigree of other spaces in the building. It provides the technical infrastructure to meet the rigours of advanced research and production. As the science challenges assumptions about what’s possible in medicine, the design of the new centre challenges ideas about what’s possible with commercial real estate.

The Lab of the Year program, sponsored by the Scientific Equipment & Furniture Association, recognises outstanding laboratory buildings that promote innovative, efficient, and safe laboratories and working and teaching environments. This year, the jury comments about the Cedars-Sinai Biomanufacturing Center included, "A thoughtful adaptation of office space in an iconic building into a life science facility" and “Clear architectural idea, difficult circumstances, best refurbishment project…”
Started in 1967, Lab of the Year is the longest standing laboratory design award program in the industry. Over the past 25 years, HDR has been recognised 11 times in this prestigious awards program.
