HDR’s Classen Selected for Waste360 40 Under 40
Mike Classen, P.E., a solid waste project engineer in HDR’s Omaha office, has been selected for Waste360’s 2017 40 Under 40 award. Classen and the others selected for the award will be formally recognized at WasteExpo, North America's largest solid waste, recycling and organics industry event, May 8-11, 2017, in New Orleans.
The awards program recognizes inspiring and innovative professionals under the age of 40 whose work in waste, recycling and organics has made a significant contribution to the industry.
Waste360 recognized Classen for his work in the solid waste industry, specifically in Iowa. He has been on the board of directors of the Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operators for the last four years, including the past two years as head of the technical advisory committee. Among his achievements noted as a board member were visits to local communities to educate them on solid waste topics. He also routinely worked as the representative of the state’s solid waste industry to communicate with key stakeholders and provide comments, questions and feedback to Iowa Department of Natural Resources for proposed rulemaking efforts and guidance or interpretations to existing solid waste regulations.
Classen was also recognized for his contributions to the solid waste industry by obtaining a significant amount of new and existing clients and guiding them through many constraints at their sites. He implemented more efficient compliance monitoring concepts for clients that saved their agencies thousands of dollars. He also received recognition for the innovative approaches he brings to his clients’ toughest operational and facility design challenges, and for continually striving to increase efficiencies and meet clients’ goals.
A professional engineer, Classen has been in the solid waste industry for the last nine years. He holds a bachelor of science degree in biological system engineering.
Classen and the others selected for the 40 Under 40 award are recognized on Waste 360’s website, where over the coming months each winner will be highlighted in greater detail.
