Hany Gerges

Hany Gerges, Ph.D., P.E.

Wastewater Optimization Process Engineer

Dr. Gerges’ role includes the evaluation, optimization, and design of wastewater treatment plants, including headworks and grit removal technologies, and environmental hydraulics and sediment transport.

Hany is passionate about hydraulic modeling/analysis and is an internationally recognized hydraulics analyst and computational fluid dynamic modeling expert for wastewater treatment plants. He is so invested in this field that he developed a number of optimization models including the High Accuracy Computer Model program called HACM©, which has been successfully used for evaluation and rerating of primary and secondary clarifiers that resulted in millions of dollars in savings to clients.

He has provided optimization and hydraulic analysis for more than 110 wastewater treatment plant projects nationwide and internationally, including the $150 million Virginia Initiative Plant Nutrient Reduction Improvements project for Hampton Roads Sanitation District in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Hany was responsible for the CFD analysis of the biological system, as well as the chlorine contact channels to identify potential fixes to minimize the adverse effect of flow imbalance. Tasks included the application of three-dimensional, two-phase flow to simulate the flow patterns.

Hany has more than 60 publications and is a regular presenter at the Water Environment Federation's Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference as well as state and local conferences, and was a primary author of the Guidelines for Grit Sampling and Characterization (WEF, 2016; www.wef.org).
