Bridging Worlds: The Future Role of the Healthcare Strategist
It’s challenging enough as an individual leader to anticipate the future and figure out what to do. How does an entire industry respond to uncertainty and change?
Inspired by our design-thinking approach and healthcare expertise, the strategic planning interest group within the American Hospital Association engaged us to help them define the future of their profession. The central question focused on how their members can continuously create value amid change and how the society can offer resources to empower their members.
We applied our innovation process to answer these questions. We interviewed strategy leaders inside and outside healthcare. We facilitated a SYNAPSE ideation session with society leaders and members. We identified trends, implications for healthcare leaders, out-of-industry examples, attributes, skills and tools. And, we tested these findings with “sounding boards” comprised of healthcare CEOs, strategic planners, marketing leaders and communications experts.
The result is Bridging Worlds: The Future Role of the Healthcare Strategist. For the Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD), this is more than a document. It has become a platform for member education and career development. The printed report has been distributed to over 20,000 healthcare leaders. More than 120,000 strategists, marketers, communicators, consultants and executives have been exposed to this work through magazines, webinars, chapter events and conference presentations.
HDR’s Strategic Innovation team maintains an ongoing relationship with the SHSMD board of directors to help them develop a competency assessment tool and deepen their educational offerings. The updated, second edition of Bridging Worlds will be released mid-2017
