Autism-friendly Learning Environments: Insights and Strategies to Promote Optimal Well-being

HDR's Brian Giebink and Bethany Friedow join representatives from Spero Academy,  a K-6 charter school designed to meet the needs of children on the autism spectrum, to present at the 24th Annual International Conference on Learning, hosted by The Learner Research Network.

Research-based educational building design has the potential to improve the quality of life for children with autism immeasurably. On the same hand, the consequences of not providing an appropriate environment can include anxiety, meltdowns, physical pain and social isolation. HDR's session explores how the design and furnishing of buildings can have a great impact on the ability of children with autism to focus and stay regulated. Presenters will share information on the current state of autism-friendly design, as well as insights and lessons learned from the process of designing a new building for Spero Academy.
