Rapid Replacement of the Bayou Sara Bridge Swing Span
Wednesday, October 24 | 9:20-10:05 a.m.
Presenters: David Knickerbocker Ph.D., P.E, HDR; Kevin Kane, P.E., Israe Zizaoui
Learn about the nearly 90-year-old, 163-ft long Bayou Sara Bridge and the replacement process that resulted in only a 14-hour rail service outage. Objectives for the replacement included minimized maintenance, remote operation capability and a premium on speed of replacement, to minimize service interruption. The resulting span is a hydraulically driven through-girder span with service tower elevated over the railway at center pivot.
Motor Upsizing
Thursday, October 25 | 8:30-9:15 a.m. & 10:35-11:20 a.m.
Presenters: Megan Tatara, EIT, and Joseph Jacobus, P.E., HDR
Upsizing the motor could cause catastrophic damage unless appropriate measures are taken to protect the mechanical, structural and electrical systems. Check out this presentation on the challenges of motor upsizing and advice for making informed decisions regarding rehabilitation of heavy moveable infrastructure.
