Transmission Line Easement to GIS Conversion

Wednesday, June 27  | 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Facilitator: James Prossick, Real Estate Services Project Principal, HDR
Presenter: Randy Olden, Geospatial Solutions Manager, HDR

Information pertaining to SMUD’s transmission line easements had existed in various systems with varying levels of accuracy. Sometimes the only records were hard copy documents shelved away in library-type fashion. In most cases, a SMUD survey crew would spend a day in the field to confirm the actual boundaries of an easement. The process for retrieving and sharing accurate information pertaining to corridor rights always required significant human effort and time prior to delivering reliable findings. SMUD’s solution was a GIS conversion effort that greatly improved the process and time associated with making quality decisions. This will directly impact internal groups such as transmission, legal, environmental, vegetation management, facilities and more.
