Behavioral Health Expertise is Bolstered with Addition of Barbara Miszkiel

Barbara Miszkiel, HDR

Barbara Miszkiel, OAA, MRAIC, EDAC, LEED AP, has joined HDR as a director of health in Canada, based in the Toronto, Ontario, office after 20 years as a Senior Principal at Stantec Architecture. Her responsibilities include expanding and enhancing our reach throughout central and Eastern Canada. With over 30 years of experience, her drive, creative energy and problem-solving skills combine business strategy with design to address client needs through unique and forward-thinking solutions.

“Barbara's enthusiasm and contribution to growing our health practice in Canada is very exciting,” said Hank Adams, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, global director of health at HDR. “Her expertise and deep understanding of the sub-acute market and mental and behavioral health will be a tremendous addition to our global practice.”

Throughout her career, Miszkiel has explored the boundaries of established thinking to create unique healing spaces with clients. She has been a specialist consultant for the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, an advocate for responsive health design through research and publications, and an advisory board member for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Having completed her architecture degree at the University of Waterloo, and a DIS Studio Program in Copenhagen, Denmark, Miszkiel is both EDAC and LEED AP certified.

Miszkiel has worked on projects including children’s treatment centers, mental health centers and hospital redevelopments throughout North America and the Middle East.
