HDR-Designed Inova Loudoun Hospital Parking Garage Wins IPI Award

Located in Leesburg, Virginia, the new HDR-designed parking garage at Inova Loudon Hospital has won the International Parking Institute’s (IPI) 2018 Best Design of a Parking Facility with Fewer than 800 Spaces award.

The new parking facility finished construction in 2017 as part of phase II of a larger, multi-phase master plan that includes already completed site work improvements to provide an increase in surface parking, a new south ingress and internal vehicular circulation boulevard, a new entrance canopy and drop-off area at the south entrance.

Designed to help patients and visitors easily navigate the facility, the parking garage uses clear sightlines by providing four continuous rows of non-ramped parking and wayfinding to identify entrances, elevator and stair locations, and outside directional information. Designated waiting and walking areas, and a future pedestrian bridge provide patrons protection from surrounding traffic. Glass walls offer natural light and views of the Inova Loudoun Hospital campus.

According to the June issue of The Parking Professional Magazine, the new parking garage “fits in [to the campus] just like it’s always been there. And that’s exactly what the hospital was going for.”

The award-winning parking garage is a 766-space structure at the hospital’s main campus. A September 2017 groundbreaking began the construction of the new 366,000-square-foot patient tower, also part of phase II of the project, in conjunction with the hospital’s $300 million master plan expansion of facilities and services.
