Mount Trashmore Overlook

HDR-Designed Mount Trashmore Overlook Celebrated with Ribbon Cutting

A repurposed landfill transformed into a scenic overlook in Cedar Rapids, Iowa recently opened to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Mount Trashmore Trails and Overlook is the highest point in Linn County, providing views of the city, the Cedar River and miles of landscape.

The transformed space, designed by HDR, includes a pavilion with four levels of terraced seating, a viewing deck, picnic areas and benches surrounded by an 18-acre pollinator zone. HDR also developed an annual inspection plan that specifies continuous monitoring of the closed landfill for elevation change and settlement issues.

Mount Trashmore Trails and Overlook includes three trails: a nearly one-mile long ADA-compliant walking/hiking trail, a multi-use trail for hikers and bicyclists, and a ‘fun ride’ for seasoned riders. The trails were custom-designed by a Colorado-based mountain biking trail expert, and connect to the 51-mile Cedar Valley trail network.
