Mark Fuhrmann to Lead HDR’s Minnesota/Wisconsin Transit Practice
HDR is pleased to welcome Mark Fuhrmann to the firm’s award-winning transit practice as a senior project manager based in the Minneapolis engineering office. He will focus on growing HDR’s full-service transit consulting practice and continued delivery of exceptional projects and programs for clients in the Minnesota and Wisconsin region. Fuhrmann’s first assignment is serving as program manager for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District West Lake and Double Track projects.
A life-long advocate of public transit, Fuhrmann was previously employed at Minneapolis’ Metropolitan Council for 25 successful years, most recently serving as the deputy general manager of Metro Transit. For the last 14 years, he primarily served in leadership positions delivering New Start Rail projects, three of which are now in service. In the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, Fuhrmann led efforts on five New Starts projects, two light rail lines and the Northstar Commuter Line as well as two LRT extensions. The Green Line light rail project opened in 2014 and reconnected the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul with light rail service for the first time since streetcars were retired 60 years ago. With the Green Line, both cities benefit greatly from light rail service every 10 minutes.
Prior to Metropolitan Council, Fuhrmann served the county of Fairfax, Virginia as a transportation planner and head of the Metro Liaison and Technical Analysis Section. He worked on Washington, D.C.-area projects including three Metro extensions in northern Virginia and the introduction of commuter rail service on two lines from Virginia serving Union Station in the District.
“I have worked in the public sector for many years and have seen the value HDR brings to its clients on highly complex public transit infrastructure investments,” said Fuhrmann. “My new position will enable me to provide these critical services to project sponsors who are investing hundreds of millions of dollars to improve mobility and access to opportunity for generations to come.”
A key player within the national transit industry, Fuhrmann served for 10 years as a member of the National Sciences Foundation Transit Cooperative Research Program Panel and was involved with the American Public Transportation Association capital investment grant and revenue management committees. He also participated in the Federal Transit Administration’s delegation to five Central and Eastern Europe urban transport authorities.
“Mark brings tremendous program management experience in the planning, permitting, design and construction of rail transit corridors, and is recognized across the industry as a ‘go to’ authority in the procedural aspects of federal- and state-funded transit programs,” said HDR Transit Director Tom Waldron. “His expertise can be tapped to assist transit authorities, cities and counties with planning, engineering and delivering new transit investments to further enhance the growing vitality of cities.”
