Two HDR Waste Projects Win Gold in SWANA Excellence Awards
Two HDR projects have received Gold Awards in two categories of the Solid Waste Association of North America’s Excellence Awards. Factoria Recycling and Transfer Station won top honors in the General Waste Facility category, and Durham York Energy Centre in the Waste-to-Energy category.
Factoria Recycling and Transfer Station
The state-of-the-art, nearly 80,000-square foot Factoria Recycling and Transfer Station, located in Bellevue, Washington, is capable of handling 225,000 tons of garbage, recycling, yard waste and household hazardous waste annually. The station uses a flat floor design, which allows for easier garbage unloading, better traffic flow and reduced customer wait times.
Anticipated to be a LEED Gold facility, Factoria Recycling and Transfer Station is a model for sustainable transfer station design. The new station uses 40 percent less electricity than similar facilities, and its rainwater catchment system is anticipated to save 1.3 million gallons of potable water a year.
Durham York Energy Centre
Located in the regions of Durham and York, Ontario, Durham York Energy Center is the first new North American waste-to-energy facility in 20 years. It’s designed to serve the regions for years to come by addressing concerns like securing long-term landfill capacity and the ever-rising cost of waste transport, along with meeting stringent air emissions regulations and producing zero water emissions.
Durham York Energy Centre processes 140,000 metric-tonnes of waste per year (35 truckloads per day), producing enough energy to power 14,000 homes. Its waste-to-energy process provides steam and hot water to local businesses.
The winners will be acknowledged and awarded at SWANA’s WASTECON in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, August 22. The Excellence Awards program features prominent programs and facilities in 13 different categories in a range of solid waste industry areas.
