HDR Celebrates Opening of New Photon Science Laboratory Project

Members of our HDR team celebrate the opening of SLAC's photon science lab building fit-out project.

HDR recently joined leaders at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Arrillaga Science Center in Menlo Park, California, to celebrate the opening of the photon science laboratory building fit-out project. The high-performance laboratory and office building expands SLAC’s photon science program by enabling a range of synthesis, characterization, simulation, theory and modeling capabilities through a multidisciplinary research approach.  

HDR led the 65,000-sf major interior and utility systems fit-out. The firm synchronized all lab planning, interiors and infrastructure using an integrated design approach. The diversity of advanced research laboratories include chemistry labs, biology labs, laser labs, a calibration clean room, a metrology clean room and a nano-fabrication clean room. Wet and dry labs are organized along a central service corridor, with all building core elements organized at the building edge to allow for long-term flexibility and efficiency.  Laser labs and research clean rooms are organized on the lower level to take advantage of the higher vibration performance on the ground floor slab.

The space also encourages collaboration and provides a comfortable and attractive work environment that engages the surrounding landscape and campus context. HDR worked with SLAC to devise a custom workplace strategy based on researchers’ unique time spent in dry- versus wet-lab environments. Offices are consolidated on the north side of the building to provide access to ample campus views and promote multidisciplinary collaboration. Central skylights and light wells allow for natural daylight to penetrate deep within the upper two levels, while shared conference rooms are organized to create collaborative office neighborhoods and promote interaction within the building.

“This project is a great example of how an advanced research facility that requires high-performing infrastructure can still be sustainable, support occupant wellness and facilitate new ways of working together,” said Greg Hadsell, project manager and Education | Science | Tech principal with HDR. “It demonstrates the commitment of SLAC leadership to advancing science, supporting employees and stewarding resources.”

The project is designed to achieve LEED platinum certification for commercial interiors.
