Federal regulations require states and other tunnel owners to load-rate all tunnels that are subject to highway vehicular loadings. However, until recently a need existed for national guidance on tunnel load rating. Frankl and Leshko will be speaking about the recently released Reference Guide for Load Rating of Tunnel Structures, published by the FHWA in May 2019. HDR was the prime author of the technical report, which provides guidelines to ensure consistency and uniformity of load rating.

The webinar is part of the FHWA’s ongoing bridge load rating webinar series and will introduce the reference guide, its purpose and its use. The guide provides technical details for the load rating of tunnel structures that meet FHWA’s general load rating guidance and provides practical, representative step-by-step examples.

Leshko, P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE, leads HDR’s Bridges and Structures inspection program and is a nationally known expert in infrastructure inspection. Frankl, P.E., Ph.D., is a researcher and bridge engineer who has load rated/designed numerous highway bridges and culverts.

The webinar will be of use to any employees of transportation agencies involved with the load rating of tunnel structures as well as representatives or consultants. Register on the FHWA website.
