Elena Sossenkina, HDR’s national levee practice lead out of Denver, Colorado, has been elected to the board of directors for the U.S. Society on Dams.

The announcement came during the society’s annual conference held this month in Chicago.

The USSD is an organization of engineering professionals dedicated to advancing the environmentally sustainable science of planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of dams, levees and associated civil engineering projects.

Sossenkina came to the United States from Moscow, Russia in the 1990s to pursue a graduate degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, after earning her Master of Science degree in applied mathematics and hydromechanics from Lomonosov Moscow State University.

She has been a member of USSD since 2002 and was instrumental in expanding the organization’s mission to include levees. Sossenkina has facilitated and organized numerous workshops on levee safety and contributed to USSD white papers on dam surveillance and monitoring. Through collaboration with the European Levees and Flood Defences Working Group, she built support for the establishment of a new technical committee on levees for the International Commission on Large Dams. That group now includes 21 member countries.

“I am honored and humbled to serve on the board of USSD," Sossenkina said. "I look forward to collaborating with our industry colleagues to further advance the role of dam and levee engineering.”
