Helios Group Tops Out HDR-Designed Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany
The new hospital building planned by HDR for the Helios Group in Wiesbaden, Germany, held its ceremonial topping-out today. The structural framework has finished on the new Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinic, which will be one of the most modern clinics in Hessen after completion.
Members of the Helios Group, the construction team, politicians, and community residents were welcomed by Clinic Manager Sandra Henek to the ceremony held within the shell of the new building. Attendees were treated to guided tours of the construction site which revealed the scale of the project.
In close collaboration with the clinic staff, the HDR-designed building reached a size of 1,076,391 square feet with the excavation pit for the new hospital building alone nearing the size of three football fields. Despite the size of the building, the floor plan provides shortened circulation routes and efficient workflows for staff while simultaneously realizing a new, creative arrangement of the premises.
The ground floor and second floor of the clinic building form a podium over the entire site, creating space for a state-of-the-art operating wing with a total of 22 operating theaters adjoined by two intensive care units and several cardiac catheterization test stations nearby. Six delivery rooms and a section for emergency cesareans, as well as a large conference area, are also located in the base podium. On top of the base there are four, three-story patient towers with more than 900 beds.
An adult emergency department, a separate pediatric emergency department and clinic, a stroke unit (stroke special ward), and rooftop helicopter landing pad are all included in the new Helios hospital in Wiesbaden. With this new building, Helios expands its medical range of services in the fields of pediatric and adolescent medicine and cardiology, as well as neurologic, intensive and vascular medicine.
A landscaped forecourt around the Central Care Center will provide stunning views of the surrounding landscape, improving the quality of stay for patients, and includes extensive green areas with a playground for children. An attractive entrance area with a cafeteria, terrace and shops will welcome patients, guests and staff in Wiesbaden.
