HDR Returns to “Breaking Through” Finals with ‘Bubbles of Hope’
Four finalists — including a conceptual design developed by HDR called Bubbles of Hope — have been named for Healthcare Design Magazine’s second Breaking Through competition.
This year’s competition is focused on “Innovation + Imagination.” A design team based in our Philadelphia architecture studio created the Bubbles of Hope design in response to the competition’s 2020 mission to “Forget what you’ve been told ‘can’t be done.’ Push away regulations, unrealistic deadlines, codes, budget constraints, and anything else standing in the way.”
Disasters such as earthquakes, floods and pandemics each pose unique challenges with the emergency response. Bubbles of Hope provides an adaptable framework for relief with a core set of common features that are utilized differently in each scenario.
The finalists were selected by a jury of industry leaders and will present their concepts to attendees at HCD Virtual during the Breaking Through Finale on Wednesday, Nov. 11, where real-time voting will determine the winner.
This marks the second time an HDR design team has made it to the finals. Our Australia-based team won the first Breaking Through competition in 2018 for their innovative concept for the Mobile Acute Services Hospital (MASH), an efficient and highly-mobile, disaster-relief system.
