Urban Design Expert Presenting ‘Beyond Today’s TOD: Advancing the Paradigm,’ Oct. 28
HDR Principal Urban Design Consultant and Senior Vice President Peter Calthorpe will be a featured keynote speaker at this year’s virtual Rail~Volution conference. The theme of this year’s conference is “The Future We Want to See,” and Calthorpe will help open it with a thought-provoking presentation on developing equitable TOD of the future.
Calthorpe, a pioneer of innovative approaches to urban revitalization, suburban growth and regional planning, will present “Beyond Today’s TOD: Advancing the Paradigm,” at 1 p.m. CDT, Oct. 28 . With the advent of new technology, changing land use patterns and evolving community needs, he will discuss new research and highlight several win-win, adaptable models for future development. The varied models help address critical issues like how we can fit more affordable and workforce housing into our communities while improving mobility for all users.
Calthorpe’s 30-year practice has helped solidify a global trend towards the key principles of New Urbanism. He has published landmark books that introduced the concept of Transit Oriented Development and Sustainable Communities, regional-scale planning and more. For his contributions, Calthorpe was awarded ULI’s prestigious “ULI Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development” in 2006.
In addition to Peter’s keynote, Mark McLaren, who represents HDR on the National Steering Committee and board of directors, will be moderating the session “Equity Meets Change: Public Health, Climate, Demographics and Technology” at 11:30 a.m., Oct. 29.
